“...Our design project included selecting furnishings and accessories for our 4500 square foot historic home, designing and installing window treatments and custom built-in cabinetry, as well as decorative and faux painting. Debra Campbell Design managed all aspects of the work in a professional and timely manner. Because we are in Carmel on a part-time basis, it was wonderful having them managing our project. "...Our realtor recommended Debra Campbell Design for design service when we bought our home in Pebble Beach, and we are so pleased he did! They managed renovation work for us since our primary home is in the bay area, then furnished the entire house with custom furnishings, and completed the project with custom bedding and window treatments throughout. During the renovation, they quickly had our guest cottage completed so we would have a place to stay during the construction phase. Things like this helped keep the stress of the renovation work to a minimum. We are so happy with the work they did, and would use them again if we have another design project. Their creativity, responsiveness and organization skills were wonderful. Importantly, we had a lot of fun working together on the project...”

HOMESTYLE BY THE SEA (Spring 2007 Issue)

"Warm Colors and Contemporary Design Harmonize in the Carmel Highlands."¯ - Kathleen M. Nevin

From the Mediterranean gardens with a waterfall cascading over marble to the warm interiors and panoramic views, the atmosphere of this Carmel Highlands home is one of complete harmony. The expansive ocean and mountain vistas are integral to the beauty of the home. Situated high above the Pacific Ocean, it affords breathtaking views from inside as well as from the glass-surrounded deck, and expansive patios and gardens.

Interior designer Debra Campbell explains that the energy of the home, built with a strong understanding of Feng Shui principles, flows freely in all directions from its epicenter.Designed and built in 2002 by Carver & Schicketanz Architects for an artist and his family, the four-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath home was purchased by the current owners two years ago.

"The design is contemporary Craftsman, with organic elements used throughout, says Debra, owner of Debra Campbell Design in Carmel-by-the-Sea. For us, it was important to honor the design when selecting furnishings, accessories, and artwork.

The use of natural materials marble floors, wood-beamed ceilings and walls of mahogany-framed glass “ inspired Debra™s selection of warm, earth tones for the textiles and accents. The golds, rusts and browns of the interior are complemented with the soft, natural hues of preserved floral arrangements.

Debra describes the artwork as eclectic“ modern oil paintings in earth tones and traditional landscapes are mixed with antique, carved Chinese screens and artifacts.

The great room features spectacular views, a handsome stone fireplace and soaring ceilings. It is furnished with a comfortable yet sophisticated sofa and chairs, and an Asian-inspired cocktail table by SummerHill, Ltd. To create a more intimate gathering space, Debra added a custom-designed, five-foot chandelier. On one wall, six lighted built-in niches highlight artifacts she carefully selected and project a soft, ambient light into the sitting area of the room. Pieces include carved stone figures from China and etched brass bases from India.

In the northern corner of the abode, filled with views of the gardens, stone patio and frothy Pacific, the master suite is a haven for the residents. Decorated in warm gold with deep burgundy accents, the suite features a cozy fireplace. French doors open to a deck facing the ocean, while a second set of doors lead to a roomy Arizona stone patio. 1 asked a local stonemason to craft a replica of the great room fireplace for the patio to warm cool coastal evenings, and to create design How between the indoors and outdoors,' says Campbell. This patio is surrounded by Mediterranean gardens of lavender, agapanthus, Carmel creeper, olive and lemon trees designed by Campbell.

The master bath seems to meld with its natural surroundings, with large windows overlooking the stone patio and fireplace. Two vessel sinks sit atop a slab marble counter next to a spa tub and spacious marble-tiled shower with a luxurious rainfall showerhead. Fixtures are by Philippe Starck. Two guestrooms continue the natural feelings and the earthy colors, found in the rest of the home.

Overlooking its own patio, with views of the five-acre property, the southern guestroom is dressed in celadon and celery green. This room is features a padded leather and wood sleigh bed by Baker, a red-painted antique chest, and an ivory reading chair also by SummerHill, Ltd. An adjoining powder room is in bold terracotta.

The "Zen- guestroom is done in sage green and gold, with two antique Chinese screens hung over a Grange headboard of solid cherry, imported from France. The view from here is of the waterfall and a small garden that showcases one of the many jade boulders that adorn the property.

This gracious home, beautifully designed and appointed by Campbell, is in harmony with its natural surroundings, and affords a comfortable haven for its appreciative owners.

HOMESTYLE BY THE SEA (Fall 2006 Issue)
"Inspirational Views and Inspired Design." - Michael Chatfield

Imagine walking up each day to a panorama of Point Lobos, with the white sand arc and breaking waves of Cannel River Beach glinting in the foreground. As the morning sun streams over the cypress trees, there's a glimpse of the Carmelite Mission tower and the mountains fading to blue in the distance. This Tuscan-style Carmel Point home features stunning views from just about every beautifully designed room.

The challenge of designing the interior spaces to integrate the views was taken on by Debra Campbell of Debra Campbell Design. The homeowners wanted each room to have a distinct feel, but also wanted the entire house to flow," says Debra. it was also important that the home reflect their casual yet sophisticated lifestyle? And the clients are very pleased with their collaboration with the designer. "When a house is finished, and you feel as happy as we do with the results, what," say the owners, "could be better? "

Great care was taken to maximize what is surely one of the most desirable locations in Cannel. "We wanted views from every room possible," say the owners. And they got their wish: every space has a view — save on guest room and the media room, both tucked privately at the rear of the home.

With the distraction of such stunning views, Debra was challenged to develop an interior palette that would showcase and complement the vistas. "The views are framed by expansive windows," says Debra, "presenting the ocean and beach almost as pieces of art. The water and sand had to be factored into the color selections. The overriding goal was to make sure the interior palette blended well with that of the outdoors."

The finishes made the home," says the lady of the house."Without these. I don't think it would be nearly as wonderful." And it is wonderful. This is a home that invited the outdoors in, and welcomes it as an integral component of the decor.
